Bone marrow produces healthy blood for us, unless…
Bone marrow ensures that our blood contains the cells we need to live. It is therefore important for our bone marrow to work properly. If things go wrong, people become very ill. Often, a stem cell transplant from a healthy donor to a sick patient is the only chance for a cure. This means that it is vitally important that there are sufficient numbers of donors to help as many patients as possible.
Bone marrow is our body’s blood production factory
Bone marrow is the factory that produces the blood in our body. Bone marrow is a tissue that is very similar to blood and is found in the hollow bones of our body, such as in the pelvis and the breastbone. Our bone marrow contains the blood stem cells, which are the parental cells for all of the different cells in our blood. We have three types of blood cells: white blood cells, red blood cells and blood platelets. All three have their own individual function.
